The High Court in Kiboga has convicted a prison warder, Anguyo Moses after he pleaded guilty to seven charges stemming  from a shooting incident at Kiboga Government Prison.

Anguyo pleaded guilty to four counts of murder, two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of threatening violence.

The murder charges relate to the deaths of Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Catherine Hope, Principal Officer Akishuri Bright, Sarah Ayebare and her infant son, Salson Niwagaba.

Prosecution told court that on February 23, 2026, Anguyo was on duty at Kiboga Government Prison while armed with an SMG rifle  became violent, during a routine inspection by his supervisors.

He had reportedly been found using a mobile phone while on duty and was ordered to hand over his firearm. Instead, he allegedly cocked the gun and aimed it at SP Ivan Niwagaba before firing at him. The officer escaped unharmed.

Anguyo then allegedly went on a shooting spree, killing Sarah Ayebare and her infant son who were in a vehicle within the prison compound.

He also allegedly shot dead ASP Catherine Hope while she was in a toilet at the District Health Officer's premises.

Principal Officer Bright Akishuri was also killed after he responded to the gunfire, reportedly believing that prisoners were escaping.

After the shooting, Anguyo allegedly fled to Saza Trading Centre, where he robbed two women of clothes while armed with the same firearm.

He later abandoned his prison uniform and the gun in Kibiga Sub-County before fleeing to Arua and crossing into the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He was subsequently arrested in Aru during a joint Uganda-DRC operation and returned to face trial in Uganda.

The prosecution has asked the court to impose the maximum sentence, including the death penalty.

Justice Jane Okuo Kajuga will  hear from the victims' families, the Uganda Prisons Service and members of the community before sentencing the convict
